Reliable, reusable respiratory protection designed specifically for children.
The MIRA Safety MD-1® fills a critical gap in emergency preparedness: reliable, reusable respiratory protection designed specifically for children. Engineered to exacting standards, it provides full-face CBRN defense against chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear threats in a lightweight, child-optimized design. Unlike disposable alternatives, the MD-1® is a durable, long-term safety solution for children aged 2 to 12.
Based on a rugged design originally developed to meet government standards in former Yugoslavia, updated with modern materials, an enhanced head harness, and full 40 mm NATO compatibility.
Engineered for Pediatric Safety & Performance
- Two Size-Specific Configurations: Medium (ages 2–6) | Large (ages 6–12)
- Ultra-Lightweight Design: 18 oz (≈510 g) with included hose
- 40 mm NATO Filter Standard: Compatible with all MIRA Safety 40 mm filters and PAPR systems; EN 148-1 / STANAG 4155 (40 mm x 1/7") thread
- Detachable 40 mm Filter Hose: Minimizes facial weight during extended wear, allowing the filter to be carried in a pouch
- Panoramic Polycarbonate Visor: >70% field of vision for added situational awareness
- Articulating Mesh 5-Point Head Harness: Secure pressure distribution and comfort
- Integrated Oro-Nasal Cup: Prevents fogging
- Durable Natural Rubber Construction: Chemical-resistant
- Wide Operational Range: –30°C to +50°C (–22°F to 122°F)
- Validated Protection: Minimum 180 minutes against S-Mustard (HD) under lab conditions (see evidence below)
Critical Protection Against Pediatric Vulnerabilities
Children are physiologically more vulnerable to CBRN threats due to higher respiratory rates and developing organs. Essential defense against:
- Chemical Warfare Agents: (e.g., VX, Sarin, HD) and poisonous substances
- Toxic Industrial Chemicals (TIC)
- Airborne pathogens (viruses, bacteria) and biological aerosols
- Radioactive dust & iodine radionuclides (I-131) and their organic compounds
- Aerosols: dust, fog, fumes; wildfire smoke; and volcanic ash

S-Mustard (HD) Test Context
Minimum 180 minutes protection under the following conditions: 17 ± 1 mg HD / 10 cm² contamination density; 5 µg HD / 1 cm² breakthrough density; test tube thickness 2.5 mm; test temperature 36 ± 1°C.
Essential Usage & Storage Guidelines
- Mandatory “Balloon Test”: Because all negative-pressure gas masks have breathing resistance, a child should be able to inflate a balloon with their own lung power before use.
- PAPR Recommended: To reduce breathing effort and fatigue, pair the MD-1® with a MIRA Safety PAPR where appropriate.
- Limitations: Not for oxygen-deficient environments or firefighting. Use only with appropriate filters and training. Not for children under 2 years.
Storage Conditions
- Store at 5°C–25°C (41°F–77°F), ≤60% RH, in a dark, cool, dust-free environment.
- Ventilate the storage area regularly and keep it free from sudden temperature changes.
- Protect from direct sunlight and radiant heat.
- Keep away from fuels, solvents, lubricants, and other inflammables.
- Do not store with or near electrical machines/appliances that produce sparks or discharges (ozone creation).
- Avoid deformation of rubber parts during storage and inspect seal integrity periodically.
