Seal Critical Hazmat Suit Interfaces Against Chemical, Biological & Particulate Threats
Kappler ChemTape® is the patented, chemical-resistant sealing tape engineered to reinforce the vulnerable interfaces (gaps) between your hazmat suit, gloves, boots, and respirator facepiece. This essential PPE accessory creates a critical barrier against chemical splashes, aerosolized hazards, biological agents, and toxic particulates, enhancing suit integrity while maintaining mobility. Manufactured in the USA.
Engineered for Maximum Hazard Protection
- Proven Chemical Resistance: Tested per ASTM F739 with ≥160 minutes holdout against the full ASTM F1001 battery of 15 liquids (acids, bases, solvents).
- Chemical Warfare Agent Defense: Tested per MIL-STD-282 with ≥8 hours holdout against VX (Nerve), GB (Sarin), and HD (Mustard).
- Polyisoprene-Based Adhesive: Rubber-based, pressure-sensitive system formulated for strong bonding to protective fabrics.
- Damage-Aware Removal: Can be applied/removed on reusable garments (Level A/B/C; NFPA-compliant). Note: removal may affect lightweight/film-based fabrics—see guidance below.
- High-Visibility Safety: Bright yellow for easy identification in hazardous scenes and during decon.
- Reliable Shelf Life: Maintains protective characteristics and adhesion indefinitely when stored properly.
Technical Specifications & Compatibility
| Specification | Detail |
|---|---|
| Dimensions | 2 inches (5.08 cm) width x 60 yards (54.86 meters) length per roll |
| Packaging | Individual roll (2" × 60 yd) per package |
| Compatibility | Level A, B, and C chemical protective clothing; NFPA-certified garments |
| Primary Use | Sealing glove-to-sleeve, boot-to-trouser, respirator facepiece, zippers, and storm flap interfaces |
| Secondary Uses | Shelter-in-place sealing; temporary tent/shelter repair; pipe leak mitigation; hazard area identification |
| Adhesion System | Pressure-sensitive; requires firm application across entire tape width |
| Application Geometry | When correctly applied, only the tape’s flat edge is exposed to contaminants |
| Critical Limitation | Enhances liquid holdout; does NOT create gas-tight or immersion-rated liquid-tight seals |
Optimal Application & Usage Guidelines
Prepare: Measure interface area. Ensure surfaces are clean and dry.
Apply: Unroll smoothly—avoid wrinkles or folds. Apply with significant pressure across the entire width (pressure-sensitive adhesive).
Prefer Continuous Runs: Use a single continuous strip around an interface when possible (avoid multiple patches).
Cut/Tear: Cut with scissors/knife or tear by pulling rapidly at a right angle (90°) with firm force.
Inspect: Verify seal integrity before entering hazardous environments.
Non-Immersion Use: ChemTape® should not be fully immersed; do not rely on it to make suits gas-tight.
Remove Post-Use (Do Not Reuse): Peel off carefully after contamination. DO NOT REUSE.
Inspect Garment: After removal, check underlying material for degradation or tearing—especially lightweight or film-based fabrics. Risk varies with temperature, exposure type, fabric, and time adhered.
Adhesive Considerations
ChemTape® uses a polyisoprene (rubber) pressure-sensitive adhesive. Certain chemicals can affect adhesives; correct application minimizes adhesive exposure (only the flat edge should remain exposed).
Storage & Longevity
| Condition | Specification |
|---|---|
| Ideal Storage | 73°F (23°C), cool, dry, dark place in original packaging |
| Maximum Storage Temperature | 120°F (49°C) |
| Heat Degradation Ratio | ~1 month @ 120°F ≈ ~1 year @ 73°F |
| Shelf Life | Effectively unlimited under ideal conditions |
Manufacturer notes no evidence of loss in protective characteristics or adhesion when stored under ideal conditions.
ChemTape® vs. Standard Duct Tape
ChemTape® is engineered for chemical and biological hazard protection at PPE interfaces using specialized polyisoprene adhesive. Standard duct tape is designed for HVAC air sealing and general repairs with different materials and capabilities. For life-safety applications involving hazardous chemicals, use ChemTape®.
